Web3 on Instagram. Web3 on Clubhouse. Web3 on Twitter. What’s this Web3? Aside from the obvious fact that it’s the next evolution of Web2, what does it consists of?

Web2, in a simple version, is the internet that we now see and use in the present day. Centralized. Read. Write. Lately, my LinkedIn and Twitter have been talking nothing but Web3. Of course, this got me curious, so I decided to dig deeper and actually understand what Web3 is. Given the way our society is progressing withcryptocurrencies, NFTs, and decentralization technologies, I found it worthy to learn it. Bitcoin has played a major rolein jumpstarting the Web3 ecosystem.

Because of the success of bitcoin, the pioneering cryptocurrency launched in 2008, many people associate blockchains primarilywith money and finance. But the applications of blockchains are much broader.

In short, Web3 is a decentralized web and unlike Web2 who runs servers on multiple centralized servers, Web3 instead runs onblockchains, driven by peer-to-peer networks.

2、Evolutionary stages（演化阶段）

Before we move to Web3, let’s go back to history and review Web1.

Web1, which is diffusedfrom the 90s to mid-2000s is an internet that is one dimensional. Back then, websites only had one function, to display a list of information. So, you can read it. There’s no posting, sharing, and interacting with other people, because it hasn’t been thought out yet.

Web3, which is now being diffused from the early 2020s up to the next decades is an internet that is not only three-dimensionalbut potentially, multi-dimensional. Thus, Facebook with its Metaverse initiative.

Example technologies are NFTs and Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Dogecoin. Take note, there’s one important backbonefor Web3 to happen, decentralization. Decentralization means there’s not a centralized source of assets like money. An example would be our modern banks. With Web3, we don’t need banks because the technology allows itself to develop from users collectively.

Web3 is already being usedto build powerful decentralized applications. These apps are removing middlemen from large industries.

For example, one project is working towards removing the need for ride-hailing companies by using a decentralized Ride Market DApp.
